Your website visitors want to find a perfect match, without wasting hours of their time. You want the same. They’ll scan your site to see if something piques their interest. If it does, they’ll check out your About/About Me/About Us page. Hopefully, they will feel a connection. If not, they’ll move on. Here’s why you should treat a visit to your About page like a virtual speed date, and how to get ready for it.

The About Page Weeds Out and Saves Time

Virtual speed daters use their mobile phone, tablet, or computer to meet a variety of new people in a relaxed environment. They are given a few minutes, typically 7–8 to get to know someone in a private chat room. Then, a host rotates the group. The group sizes vary, but participants often talk to 5–15 different people.

For many, virtual speed dating solves a problem. It’s a fast and efficient way to meet a lot of people at one time.

Virtual speed daters can:

  • Be upfront with their beliefs and values
  • Talk about what they are looking for and what they have to offer
  • Show their unique personality
  • Narrow down prospects
  • Have the power to pick the people they feel connected to

Your website’s About page is no different. People usually search online to solve a problem. It could be to find a product or service they want, to be entertained, to learn how to do something, to find employment, or something else. Visiting your About page means they want to learn more — about you. If they feel you’re not what they’re looking for, or they aren’t convinced your product or service can help them, they’ll leave.

This isn’t a bad thing. You want prospects to weed themselves out.

Your About Me page allows you to:

  • Be upfront about your beliefs, values, life lessons, and experience
  • Talk about what your business has to offer and the problems you solve
  • Show your unique personality
  • Narrow down your target audience to your niche audience
  • Be in charge of attracting your ideal clientele

If written properly, your About Me page will connect you with your niche.

How to Write an About Us Page

There are several options to consider when writing your About/About Me/About Us page.

#1. You can download an About Me page template online. Many are free.

#2. You can write it yourself. Granted, it may take up a significant amount of your time, but it is totally doable. Keep in mind these four guidelines when writing your own About page.

  • Capture Attention Immediately. Get attention-grabbing headline suggestions in my previous blog. Storytelling is a good choice for an About Me page. Stories are relatable. Stories are engaging. They also establish credibility. But, make it brief. A story that goes on and on is boring. People want to know why you do what you do. Share your journey and what you learned along the way. Most importantly, share how they will benefit by working with you. Show your personality. Be human, and do include a photo or a few photos. People like to see a face behind the brand.
  • Remember that your About page isn’t really about you. Who likes talking with a self-absorbed person? No one. Your About page is for your audience. It needs to address what problems you will solve and how. Include your beliefs, values, experience, education, relevant accomplishments, and credentials. Do it in a way that highlights value to the reader. Highlight value everywhere. Let them know what’s in it for them.
  • Make your USP clear. Your Unique Selling Proposition is the thing you can offer that your competitors can’t. It should show why someone should work with or purchase from you, and you alone. Many business owners don’t even know what their USP is. You can’t showcase it in your marketing if you can’t define it yourself. Having trouble defining your USP? Check out this article from Entrepreneur.com.
  • Include a call to action. Your About page is one of the most visited pages on your site. Take advantage of it. It’s a perfect opportunity to give the visitor something to do next. They can subscribe to your newsletter or blog. Send you an email. Follow your social media. Even download an e-book. There are many options. Help them to feel good about taking the next step with you. Tell them how to proceed.

#3. Hire a website copywriter to write your About Me page. There are great reasons for hiring a copywriter to help. Here are a few of them.

  • One of the main reasons why you should think about hiring a website copywriter is to have more time to focus on clients. Crafting informative, consistent, engaging content can take up a significant amount of time. Copywriters are a great way to save that time.
  • Bad grammar and misspellings are innocent mistakes, but they can discredit your business and its message. Hiring a copywriter who writes clear, concise, error-free copy can save your credibility.
  • A good SEO website copywriter researches keywords and uses them effectively. This helps readers to find your content in search engines.
  • A copywriter makes words come to life. It doesn’t matter how Search Engine Optimized your About page is, if it is boring to the reader, they’ll pass on it.

How Long Should an About Me Page Be?

Digital marketing expert, Neil Patel, says that if your About page has more than 500 words, you’re going on too much and you’re going to get a big (reader) drop off. Opinions vary. However, most feel keeping it short, relevant, and on-point is best. Some readers will want to read word for word. Some will want to skim your page. Write to both.

Conclusion

Your About/About Me/About Us page has a lot to accomplish in a short amount of time. It should communicate who you are, what you’re about, and what makes you unique. It must convince your target audience that you’re the best choice to solve their problem. And, a call to action should be clear. If your About page has all that, AND readers feel a connection with you — you’ll snag a dreamboat client.
